AnakPinang Calls Upon The State Government To Exercise More Control Over Hillside Development

Press Statement By A Group Of Penangites 'AnakPinang' (25 October 2018).

We, a group of Penangites called AnakPinang, are saddened by the recent loss of lives at Jalan Bukit Kukus due to landslide.

The chief minister's instruction to all state agencies to evaluate every present and upcoming infrastructure and development projects in Penang is therefore welcomed.

Penang must continue to progress through development to become a more economically established and socially resilient state.

Therefore we applaud the critical measures taken by the state to review existing and future projects, in particular hillslope development, instead of cancelling all of them.

Since Penang island has limited flat land, we cannot rule out necessary development that may involve hillslope.

Therefore the way forward is to have better planning to adapt to climate change, better mitigation, better check, and better enforcement of those projects.

We urge the state government to conduct thorough investigation over the Jalan Bukit Kukus incident to give the public an answer as to what went wrong in the project.

We also urge our fellow members of the public to stop any premature speculation or to blame any one side before the investigation is completed.

We should allow the authorities to carry out their investigation in order for the just process to take its course.

Lastly, we demand the state government to allocate more resources (more than last year's RM10 million) in the upcoming budget and establish a dedicated department to strengthen the hills and hillslopes.
