Traffic congestion in Penang getting worse

The issue of traffic congestion is one that most Penangites cannot ignore or overlook. Year over year, it seems to get worse. Clearly one can see that during pack hours, all the roads are jam packed. It's such a pity for drivers to waste hours on the road before they can reach their destination.

It's beyond doubt driving has become a chore to "reckon with" if you need to go somewhere. You will probably see more irritable drivers than happy ones on the road of Penang nowadays.

Improvement to public transportation is a must for Penang. And there's no better time than now. Before the traffic jams bring Penang to a total stand still, let's get an improvement to our transportation system.

The Light Rail Transit (LRT), being elevated, is the best option. It runs on its own track and will arrive and leave on time. It is also the most environmentally friendly option as it does not emit any toxic fumes.

In comparison, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) has to share road space with cars. Putting aside a dedicated bus lanes is not possible to be carried out throughout the entire bus route. Not all the busy roads of Penang have space to construct such bus lanes. It is simply not possible.

I don't see how car drivers can leave their cars at home to take the bus when they know the bus will also be stuck in the same jam if they travel by car. In jams, bus are very much slower than cars.

On the other hand drivers can easily leave their cars at home and hop onto the LRT because they know LRT on elevated track will arrive at their destination faster, cheaper and on time. They will arrive at their destination without much stress. Therefore, it is the better option.

As a conclusion, the LRT is a much better option than the BRT.
